Planning Cinematography - Miss Georgiou

Planning Cinematography - Miss Georgiou

Cinematography is the art of making motion pictures, this includes the manipulation of the camera lens, camera frame, scale and the movement. Without cinematography the audience would not be able to see what is happening within a scene. Cinematography is also important as it means that the music video is not boring as one shot throughout the entire music video would be very boring, meaning there is a need for a change for camera shots and angles. Within this blog I will be discussing the many styles of cinematography to be implemented within our own music video and how they are effective or conventional.

Close Ups - The first and main camera angle I will be using with my music video is the use of close ups, there are many reasons as to why I will be using this angle. Firstly the use of this camera angle correlates with Goodwin's theory as to what makes an effective music video and thus I will use it in ours with hopes that the video will be successful. The use of a close up is also effective as it means that we can implement the many lip syncing features within the music video and the words can clearly be seen being sang within the music video as the camera is focusing on the mouth movement.
A close up may also be effective in terms of making a certain aspect a key focus or point within the music video, as our video has several narrative aspects this will be useful and we will be implementing it within our music video to highlight certain things, such as when the protagonist takes his drugs.

High/Low Angle - The use of these two different shots will be to create a portrayal of a specific character within our music video, or to give a different view on a certain shot. A high angle will be used to suggest that the character within our music video is timid and weak whereas a low angle will suggest the artist is of a higher status than the viewer and is of high power. Just through the use of these two different angles a representation is created and it is an easy shot to film when using the tripod and positioning ones self correctly.

Tracking/Panning shot - We also plan to us tracking and panning shots within our music video, these two elements are useful for many reasons. Firstly they showcase a wide setting without the need to change the frame, and they are also both not conventional and thus add something different to our music videos. They will be very effective within our music videos are we use several different scenic locations and thus the viewers will easily see all of the buildings easily.

  1. This post demonstrates some planning techniques. You have made a start in considering some of the camera shots that you would like to include within your music video and you have started to consider the effect that is created. However, some of these points are basic and need to be developed further.

    This can be achieved through-
    1) Relating your points back to the lyrics of your song to demonstrate further planning techniques
    2) Relate back to the codes and conventions of your genre
    3) Include images to support your points
    4) Explain how the camera shots will help your artist to build a relationship with your target audience
