Research into record labels - Miss Georgiou

Record labels are an incredibly important part of the music industry in terms of managing many different artists in order for them to release the best products in order to increase publicity and to gain the highest sales. There are two different types of record labels in the music industry, Major Record Labels, and Independent Record Labels, I will be investigating both labels for the artists within the labels and their networks within the entertainment industry.

Major Record Labels - There are three major record labels that dominate the music industry, Universal Music, Sony Music and Warner Music. These record labels make up over 75% of the music sold within the music market and essentially have control over the biggest artists and musicians within the mainstream. Universal Music own artists such as Bastille, Elbow, Ellie Goulding, Elton John , Emeli Sande, Fall Out Boy, Fat Boy Slim, Florence + The Machine, Iggy Azalea, Imagine Dragons, Jake Bugg, Kaiser Chiefs, Kate Perry, Ne-Yo, One Republic, Sam Smith, Taylor Swift, 50 Cent Sony Music own musicians such as Miley Cyrus, Faith, Williams, Daft Punk, Olly Murs, Tine Tempah, 1D. Warner Music own artists such as James Blunt, Ramones, Paolo Nutini, B.o.B, David Guetta, Coldplay, Fleetwood Mac, Ed Sheeren. The major record labels also own other smaller labels, such as Interscope records, Capitol records, Elektra records, Columbia records.

Independent Record LabelsIndependent Record labels are different to major record labels in many ways, firstly they are much smaller in terms of the amount of artists signed to the label, they tend to sign more unique artists to their labels and tend to go against the mainstream. Well known independant labels include labels such as XL recordings, Rough Trade, Fools Gold, and Sub Gold, These labels add a variation to the mainstream as the artists signed are usually not entirely conventional, as they are not molded as they have more time spent on them due to the small amount of people within each record label. These labels sometimes act as a springboard for many artists whom get signed to bigger labels when they gain attention which is a negative side of these labels.

  1. You have made a start in identifying some examples of major and independent record labels and music artists. But you need to ensure that you also include the summary points within this post, to demonstrate further understanding of the music industry.
